Underwater virtual reality 360°
Underwater 360° video from one of the Xingu river's tributaries. Fishes making an appearance include: stingrays / arraia (Potamotrygon leopoldi , piranhas (Serrasalmus manueli and Pristobrycon spilopleura), characins (Hemiodus , Brycon , Arconectes), pike cichlid / jacunda (Crenicichla phaiospilus) , pacu (Metynnis polystictus), trairão / wolf fish (Hoplias aimara), Leporinus sp. and many others.
The headwaters of the Rio Xingu in Brazil's Mato Grosso state drain small valleys in a region devastated by industrial agriculture from soy bean production and cattle farming. Where forest remains the rivers have clear water and many fish school in deep water. In this location an old bridge has collapsed, leaving behind timbers and structures in deep water (10 m/30 ft) below the new bridge.

Ptychochromis insolitus, the endangered Mangarahara cichlid from Madagascar
Ptychochromis insolitus, also known as the Mangarahara cichlid, or Joba Mena, is one of the most endangered cichlids in the world. Its habitat in Madagascar is changing because of dams and deforestation. Introduced species also outcompete this endemic cichlid. Conservation groups, zoos, and dedicated hobbyists try to maintain this unusual cichlid in captivity.
Corydoras apiaka in nature
The Teles Pires Hydroelectric project is permanently flooding rapids and small creeks in the region around Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Corydoras apiaka is one of the species affected by the flooding. Habitats like the small creeks shown here are quickly disappearing all over the world as deforestation, mining, industrial agriculture and hydroelectric dams destroy these biotopes. Come see this small Corydoras catfish in nature, in a beautiful creek that now no longer exists.

Filmed by UAV during the 2016 Fish+Forest Expedition- see the Rio Iriri, just upstream of the confluence with the Rio Xingu. This large rapid is the location of the famous L177 Gold Nugget pleco, Baryancistrus xanthellus. Cichla melaniae, Hoplias aimara, Potamotrygon leopoldi (polkadot stingray), Retroculus xinguensis and Crenicichla dandara can also be all found here.

As the first companion video the Tetra Special Issue from AMAZONAS Magazine this video check out this first of two YouTube videos showing 30 of the new tetras from Mato Grosso Brazil. For some of these fish this is the first time they are shown on video and many are still very difficult to find in the hobby.
